East Riding Council awards £4.1m of taxi transport work across 76 school and SEND routes
East Riding of Yorkshire Council has awarded taxi transport contracts worth a combined £4.1 million excluding VAT across 76 home-to-school and special educational needs transport routes, according to a recent procurement award notice.
The work has been distributed among 28 suppliers, ranging from limited companies operating taxi and passenger transport fleets to smaller local providers.
The contracts were procured through East Riding’s 2368 Passenger Transport Dynamic Purchasing System. That system covers bus and taxi transport and is scheduled to remain open until 30 November 2027. Taxi suppliers seeking admission to its taxi lot must hold either a private hire operator licence or the appropriate hackney carriage proprietor and driver licences.
The newly published award notice says 76 home-to-school and special educational needs transport routes have been awarded. Procurement classifications include taxi services, special-purpose road passenger transport and hire of passenger cars with a driver.
Published procurement data gives a total value of £4,101,053 for the awards. Individual contracts vary substantially in size, reflecting the different routes and transport requirements covered by the procurement. The award notice records 28 successful suppliers rather than allocating the entire value to a single operator.
The council’s passenger transport system is designed to procure transport for functions including home-to-school journeys, public transport and social services. Its taxi lot is specifically structured for licensed taxi and private hire businesses, making the latest awards a sizeable source of contracted work for the local passenger transport market.
The September awards follow other substantial East Riding taxi procurements. A January 2026 award covered 17 home-to-school and 41 special educational needs routes with a total value of £3,393,700 excluding VAT, while an April procurement awarded four home-to-school and 21 SEND routes with a reported combined value of £1,370,881.
That continuing programme illustrates the scale of local-authority contract work available to taxi and private hire businesses beyond conventional rank, street-hail and consumer booking markets. It also means successful suppliers can become exposed to different operating requirements, including fixed school schedules and the needs of passengers requiring specialist transport.
