East Suffolk Council has opened a six-week consultation on proposed changes to its Taxi and Private Hire Vehicle Specification.
The specification sets the standards licensed vehicles must meet to demonstrate they are safe, suitable and appropriate for passenger use across the district.
The proposed revisions were developed in consultation with the council’s appointed vehicle testing garages. East Suffolk Council has described the amendments as minor, although several could affect how vehicles are presented, inspected and approved for licensing.
Changes under consideration include clarification of existing requirements and updates intended to align the specification with current legislation.
The council is also proposing greater flexibility in vehicle seating layouts, potentially widening the range of configurations available to operators and vehicle proprietors.
New requirements concerning vehicle safety recalls are also included. Full details of how outstanding recalls would affect vehicle licensing or testing were not provided in the consultation announcement.
The council is seeking responses from taxi and private hire licence holders, passengers and other people with an interest in local licensing standards. It wants feedback on the level of support for the proposals, their potential effects and whether amendments should be made before a final decision.
All comments received will be included in a report scheduled to go before East Suffolk Council’s Licensing Committee in October 2026. The responses will form part of a public document, meaning contributors should consider this when submitting personal or commercially sensitive information.
The consultation closes on 21 September 2026. Representations can be sent by email to licensing@eastsuffolk.gov.uk.
