The Edinburgh Taxi Outing could still go ahead after Police Scotland confirmed progress had been made on plans to support the event on its original route.
The update follows emergency talks between police, organisers and City of Edinburgh councillors after this year’s outing was cancelled over concerns linked to rolling road closures and updated national guidance.
Superintendent Neil Wilson said discussions with organisers had been constructive and had resulted in an outline agreement to allow the convoy to operate safely.
Wilson said: “Our focus throughout has been to support the Edinburgh Taxi Outing as we have done for many years. We have held constructive discussions today with the event organiser and have agreed an outline plan which allows the event to run safely on its original route.
Police and organisers have agreed an outline plan aimed at allowing the historic children’s taxi convoy to proceed safely.
“Further discussions will take place in the coming days to finalise the police operation to support the event and ensure the children enjoy their day.”
The annual outing, organised and funded by Edinburgh taxi drivers, provides a day out for children with additional support needs, life-limiting illnesses and terminal conditions. Concerns had been raised by organisers after they were told the convoy may have to travel within normal traffic conditions rather than under rolling road closures.
The apparent breakthrough is likely to bring relief across Edinburgh’s taxi trade and among families connected to the event, which has run for decades and is regarded as one of the capital’s best-known community traditions.
