Event venues turn to taxi apps and digital hailing tools to manage late-night crowd departures

Large entertainment venues across the UK are increasingly partnering with taxi booking platforms and digital hailing technology to manage the surge of passengers leaving events late at night.

Concert halls, arenas and theatres regularly release thousands of people within a short time window once performances end. For venue operators, coordinating onward transport has become a growing operational priority, particularly in city centres where congestion, limited parking and late public transport schedules can create bottlenecks.

Recent partnerships such as the agreement between black cab booking platform Gett and the Royal Albert Hall illustrate how venues are linking directly with taxi networks to help move audiences more efficiently. The collaboration allows visitors to pre-book licensed black cabs through the app and arrange transport immediately after events finish.

For venues hosting thousands of visitors each night, taxi technology can play a role in smoothing passenger flow. Industry operators say that reliable access to taxis reduces crowd build-up outside venues and helps prevent the long queues that can form when audiences exit simultaneously.

Partnerships between venues and taxi technology providers are becoming a growing strategy to move large crowds safely and efficiently after major events.

Alongside app-based bookings, some venues have also introduced dedicated taxi hailing devices based on so-called “Taxi Butler” technology. These systems are typically placed at concierge desks or venue exits and allow staff to request a taxi instantly through a simple electronic interface.

Rather than passengers downloading an app or making a phone call, venue staff press a button that electronically hails a nearby licensed taxi. The request is transmitted directly to drivers in the area, with the system automatically dispatching the closest available vehicle.

For event venues, the approach offers a simple way to organise transport for visitors unfamiliar with local taxi services, particularly international tourists or guests without ride-hailing apps installed on their phones.

The technology has been widely used in hotels and hospitality venues, but its use is expanding into event spaces where crowd dispersal is a critical operational concern.

At the same time, new taxi booking platforms are entering the market with simplified digital hailing models that may appeal to venues seeking straightforward booking options.

Platforms such as Jump and BlackCab.com are positioning themselves around quick access to licensed taxis without requiring complex app navigation or account setup. Some services also offer the ability to book a taxi directly through a website interface rather than a mobile app.

This simplified approach could capture a segment of the market among occasional taxi users attending concerts, sporting events or theatre shows, where passengers may only need transport a few times a year.

For venue operators integrating a web-based or one-click taxi request could also reduce friction for customers leaving late-night performances, particularly when demand for transport peaks within a narrow time window.

As the live entertainment sector continues to recover and expand, transport planning is becoming more closely linked with the visitor experience. Partnerships between venues and taxi platforms are increasingly viewed as part of wider crowd management strategies, helping move large numbers of people safely and efficiently once the curtain falls.
