Four taxi and private hire vehicle licences were suspended after Bradford Council carried out roadside compliance checks as part of Operation Steerside.
Licensing officers inspected 21 vehicles during the enforcement operation on Saturday 15 August. One vehicle was recorded as requiring “ratification”, while five drivers received words of advice.
West Yorkshire Police did not provide details of the defects or licensing breaches behind the four suspensions. It is therefore not known whether the action related to vehicle condition, documentation or another licensing requirement.
The suspension rate represented almost one in five of the licensed vehicles inspected. A suspension can prevent a vehicle from being used for licensed work until the council is satisfied that the identified issue has been addressed.
The checks formed part of a wider operation involving Bradford City and Bradford West neighbourhood policing teams, special constables, the Roads Policing Unit, council departments and other partner agencies.
Police issued 22 Traffic Offence Reports during the operation and seized five vehicles. The reported offences included driving without insurance, having no MOT, seatbelt breaches, illegal window tints, mobile phone use, defective brake lights and driving while disqualified.
Officers also submitted ten intelligence reports and made one arrest in connection with burglary. Bradford Council’s highways team seized three vehicles for having no vehicle tax and recovered one abandoned vehicle, while environmental enforcement officers checked a further 22 vehicles.
The operation took place despite additional policing demands from Bradford Pride and a Bradford City football fixture. West Yorkshire Police said the activity focused on road safety, vehicle compliance and criminality.
For taxi and PHV operators, the results show the operational consequences of failing a roadside licensing inspection. A vehicle suspension can immediately remove earning capacity until any defect or compliance failure has been rectified and the vehicle is cleared to return to service.
