Chester Local Policing Unit continued ‘Operation Recordings’, which aimed to ensure taxis and private hire vehicles (PHV) operating in the area are lawful, safe, and properly licensed.
The operation, run by the Chester Beat Management Team and the Special Constabulary, with support from the Local Authority Licensing Team, has seen over 400 taxis and PHVs stopped and inspected since its launch. Officers are working closely with drivers to promote compliance and tackle the problem of unregistered and unsafe taxis.
Over the weekend of Friday 25 April to Sunday 27 April, Cheshire Police officers carried out inspections on locally licenced taxis and those licenced in other areas. Although it is legal for PHVs from other council areas to operate in Chester, it presents challenges for local authorities in carrying out regular safety checks.
Officers were deployed to key locations across Chester, speaking to drivers and conducting checks on vehicle lights, driver identification, and the operation of onboard CCTV systems where required.
The inspections resulted in four licensed vehicles receiving warning notices for issues including faulty brake lights and incorrectly displayed number plates.
Inspector James Wilson said:"Operation Recordings was launched by the of the Chester Beat Management Team along with local partners including taxi licensing officers for Cheshire West and Chester, Wolverhampton, Wrexham, Sefton and Flintshire, in order to combat unlicensed passenger vehicles.
"The aim of the operation is to provide reassurance to those using taxis in Chester, that they are safe to use and road worthy with enforcement action being taken where appropriate. It was really reassuring to see that so many of the taxis that operate in our area were compliant with the appropriate legislation.
"Our officers will continue to support the legitimate taxi drivers in Chester and ensure those enjoying a day out here can return home safely."
