Tameside Council, in collaboration with Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), conducted comprehensive car safety checks as part of Operation Avro.

The Licensing team undertook thorough inspections on both taxis and private hire vehicles (PHV), and all vehicles were found to be fully compliant, according to a Tameside Council spokesperson.

Licensing checks on taxis and private hire vehicles are crucial for several reasons. Firstly, these checks ensure that all drivers possess the necessary licences and permits to operate legally. This helps to maintain the integrity of the industry and protects passengers from unqualified or unauthorised drivers.

Additionally, licensing checks verify the condition and roadworthiness of the vehicles used for hire. Regular inspections guarantee that taxis and private hire vehicles comply with safety standards, reducing the risk of accidents and potential harm to passengers. These checks encompass factors such as vehicle maintenance, cleanliness and adequate insurance coverage.

A Tameside Council spokesperson said: “We've been working with Greater Manchester Police (GMP) and DVSA on car safety checks as part of today's Operation Avro. Our Licensing team carried out checks on private hire cabs and taxis, all of which were fully compliant.”
