A new wireless charging station has been installed outside The Swedish Exhibition & Congress Centre and Gothia Towers in Gothenburg, supporting the city’s expanding electric taxi infrastructure.
The station, announced during the EVS38 conference, will serve a fleet of Volvo XC40 electric taxis. Each unit can charge two vehicles simultaneously at up to 75 kW per vehicle. The station follows a three-year trial, known as the Wireless Charging project, which tested the system using 20 electric taxis and four inground chargers at Lindholmen Science Park and Sahlgrenska University Hospital.
The trial recorded 10,000 charging events with full operational uptime. It delivered 140 megawatt hours of energy and supported vehicles covering 5 million kilometres. The system worked in all weather conditions, including snow and ice, and drivers reported ease of use with hands-free functionality.
InductEV, the company behind the inductive charging technology, will now take over the running of all three of the city’s wireless charging locations. This marks the firm’s first move into a “charging-as-a-service” model, removing the need for cables, moving parts, or external payment methods.
The Wireless Charging project is part of the Gothenburg Green City Zone initiative, led by Business Region Göteborg. Inductive charging has been especially valued by drivers at key locations such as airports, hotels, hospitals and fair centres. The new station at Gothia Towers aims to meet growing demand and further prove the practicality of wireless charging across commercial fleets.
Patrik Andersson, CEO, Business Region Göteborg, said: "Gothenburg is not just a city – it's a hotspot for innovation and frontrunner in sustainability.
“We have found wireless charging to be attractive for taxi fleets and other transporters at key locations within the city, with great potential of supporting our city’s climate targets of lowering the emission from the traffic system. We are happy to foster further collaboration, and glad that an absolute majority of the project’s drivers are keen to continue using this innovative solution.”
John F Rizzo, President and CEO of InductEV, said: “We look forward to continuing the successful track record of wireless charging technology in the City of Gothenburg alongside Business Region Gothenburg and Svenska Mässan Gothia Towers.
“We also intend to expand the use of this important technology and assume operational control of the city’s wireless charging stations. Finally, we are proud of the three-year partnership we had with Volvo Cars and the City of Gothenburg to drive this bold and innovative project.”
Joachim Hult, COO, Real Estate, Logistics & Production, Project Management and Venue Development at Svenska Mässan Gothia Towers, said: “We’re glad to join this innovative project – a hands-on example of how sustainable development moves forward when local and international partners work together.
“Through our role in the Gothenburg Green City Zone, we want to contribute to more sustainable transport in the city. Making space for this new wireless charging station and powering it with renewable electricity is a natural fit with that ambition.”
