What earns you a one-star Uber passenger rating? Drivers reveal the behaviours that make them hit the lowest score

For many Uber passengers, a poor rating can come as a surprise. Most riders assume that simply getting from A to B without incident guarantees a five-star review. However, a recent discussion among Uber drivers on Reddit has shed light on the behaviours that commonly result in the platform’s lowest possible passenger rating.

The conversation began when a newly-qualified Uber driver asked fellow drivers when they considered it appropriate to issue a one-star rating rather than the default five stars. The responses revealed that while one-star ratings are relatively uncommon, drivers often reserve them for passengers they never want to be matched with again.

One of the most frequently mentioned frustrations was passengers adding extra stops after the journey has started without first asking the driver. While Uber allows riders to amend trips, many drivers argued that unexpected changes can disrupt earnings, delay subsequent bookings and extend journeys they originally accepted under different conditions. Several contributors said they would immediately issue a one-star rating in those circumstances.

Disrespectful behaviour featured heavily throughout the discussion. Drivers said passengers who are verbally abusive, aggressively demanding or dismissive are far more likely to receive the lowest possible score. Other commonly mentioned issues included slamming doors, leaving rubbish behind, eating in the vehicle without permission, attempting to exceed the vehicle’s legal passenger capacity or making unreasonable requests such as asking drivers to break traffic laws.

Several experienced drivers also explained that ratings are sometimes used as a tool rather than simply as feedback. The more experienced drivers on Uber, suggested a one-star rating can prevent a future match between that driver and passenger, allowing drivers to avoid riders they found difficult or unpleasant.

Interestingly, many drivers acknowledged that passengers sometimes receive a one-star rating despite believing they did nothing wrong. Some suggested accidental button presses can happen, while others admitted ratings can occasionally reflect a driver’s bad day rather than the rider’s behaviour. .

The wider community also highlighted the uncertainty surrounding passenger ratings. Many users reported discovering one-star reviews despite describing themselves as punctual, polite and clean. Others said they could only speculate about the cause because Uber does not tell passengers which trip resulted in the rating or provide a specific reason.

For the overwhelming majority of passengers, however, drivers indicated that five stars remain the default. Quiet riders, polite conversation, being ready at the pickup point and respecting the driver’s vehicle were repeatedly described as the easiest ways to maintain a strong passenger rating. According to the discussion, it generally takes behaviour that is considered particularly disruptive, disrespectful or inconvenient before many drivers are willing to hand out the platform’s harshest score.
