Government confirms Euro 7 deadlines for all new cars used by taxi and private hire fleets

The Government has confirmed plans to introduce Euro 7 emissions standards for new cars registered in Great Britain from 29 November 2027.
The Department for Transport announced the decision yesterday following a consultation on updating vehicle emissions requirements.
The new standards will apply to mass-produced cars and vans, including models purchased for taxi and private hire use. Euro 7 introduces requirements covering exhaust emissions, brake particles, tyre wear and electric vehicle battery durability.
Ministers have dropped an earlier proposal to make Euro 7 compulsory for newly approved vehicle types from November 2026, following concerns raised by manufacturers about insufficient preparation time. However, the November 2027 deadline for new registrations will remain.
Smaller manufacturers registering fewer than 2,500 cars or vans annually in Great Britain will receive an extended deadline of 1 July 2030.
The Government has also decided against mandating Euro 7 for vehicles approved under certain small-series, medium-series and individual vehicle approval arrangements.
The consultation attracted 67 responses, including submissions from vehicle manufacturers, fleet operators and automotive trade bodies.
Some respondents warned that tougher requirements could increase vehicle servicing costs, particularly for replacement brakes and tyres.
The Department for Transport said it would initially exempt replacement brakes fitted to Euro 7 vehicles from the new brake wear requirements.
Legislation implementing the changes has yet to be introduced.
The standards concern new vehicle registrations and do not impose a requirement for existing taxi and private hire fleets to replace their vehicles.
