Uber has unveiled a new countryside rail experience for summer, combining wine tourism with a nostalgic train ride aboard the Golden Arrow Pullman. The ‘Grape British Railway’ departs from Kingscote Station this August, offering a £10 per person day trip to the Highweald vineyard, complete with a three-course meal and guided wine tasting.
The trip includes a ride on the vintage Pullman carriage, which has featured in TV series including Downton Abbey and Poirot. The train journey includes live string performances of well-known pop songs and a British-inspired lunch paired with local wines. Non-alcoholic options are also available.
The package is available exclusively through Uber, and reflects the platform’s growing role in rail travel. Uber’s train bookings have increased by 80% over the past year. The Grape British Railway aims to tap into the demand for short, local getaways, especially among younger travellers.
New research suggests Gen Z are increasingly choosing staycations over foreign travel, with 66% preferring local trips. A growing number are also prioritising relaxation, budget, and memorable activities when choosing holidays. Only 22% of Gen Z respondents said they prefer party destinations, while 64% lean towards quieter domestic escapes.
The growth of English wine tourism supports this trend. With climate conditions in parts of the South East now similar to Champagne’s climate in previous decades, UK vineyards have become a rising attraction. Over 300 vineyards are now involved in wine tourism, with visitor numbers increasing by 55% between 2022 and 2023, according to Wine GB.
Wine tourism now accounts for around a quarter of winery income, with 1.5 million visits recorded last year. The Grape British Railway experience forms part of a wider shift towards domestic experiences and reflects the ongoing changes in how UK residents plan their time off.
Andrew Brem, General Manager at Uber UK, said: “We’re incredibly excited to launch The Grape British Railway, a beautiful blend of British style, scenery, and sommelier-selected wines. With English vineyards on the rise and more people discovering the joy of exploring the UK by train, it’s the perfect summer escape. Whether you’re a wine lover or simply after a unique weekend experience, it’s all bookable at the tap of a button via the Uber app.”
Colm Evans, Winemaker at Highweald Vineyard, said: “We’re thrilled to partner with Uber to bring The Grape British Railway to life. There’s never been a more exciting time for English wine, and this unique experience gives guests the chance to see – and taste – what makes our vineyards so special. From the first glass to the last view of the countryside, it celebrates everything we love about our homegrown wine culture.”
Uber’s Grape British Railway will run exclusively on the 23 and 30 August and is bookable via The Grape British Railway website.
