A group of ten London taxi drivers will lace up their running shoes on 24 September 2025 in a bid to raise £10,000 for the Cabmen’s Shelter Fund (CSF).
The drivers, calling themselves the Green Hut Run Club, will cover 16 miles across the capital, stopping at all 13 of the city’s Grade II listed green cab shelters. The group also includes YouTube cabbie star Tom Hutley.
Starting from the shelter at Warwick Avenue at 8am, the group will aim to finish the route by late morning at St John’s Wood, home to the first-ever green hut and the city’s latest appointed shelter keeper. The run will take in some of the most historic and recognisable shelters still in operation, with plenty of tea stops along the way.
The CSF is a small charity that depends on donations and rent to maintain the iconic green huts. For many taxi drivers, they offer essential rest, shelter, and a space to connect with colleagues during long shifts.
Maintenance of these historic structures is expensive. As listed buildings, repairs must meet specific conservation requirements, which often drives up costs. The Cromwell Gardens shelter, known as the “Bell and Horns”, was heavily damaged after being hit by a vehicle. Despite careful restoration work, it remains closed and highlights the challenges of preserving these pieces of street history.
With just over £400 raised so far, the Green Hut Run Club is calling on drivers, businesses and Londoners to help support the cause. All donations will go directly to the upkeep and repair of the shelters to ensure they remain part of the city’s streetscape.
Supporters can follow the group’s progress online as they visit each shelter and share images of the run. Anyone wishing to donate to the cause can also do so via their JustGiving page found here.
