Iconic taxi off to the crusher after disqualified Bolton man caught driving around without insurance

Michael Murphy

A man has been summoned to court after being caught driving around Johnson Fold, Bolton-West in an old iconic black taxi with no insurance, which will now be sent to be crushed.

The unnamed man, who is serving a disqualification from driving, was caught by Greater Manchester Police Bolton-West on Sunday 3 May.

The man was not believed to be a taxi driver or attempting to impersonate one.

A spokesperson for GMP Bolton-West, said: "Officers from Bolton-West have just stopped this old London Taxi being driven along Worston Avenue at Johnson Ford.

"After a few quick checks, the driver was found to be disqualified as well as having no insurance. The car has been seized and disclaimed and will be sent to the crusher with the driver being summoned to court."

The decision to crush the vehicle has come under fire from members of the public, with one saying: "I'm sure donating it to some wheelchair charity would be better than crushing it. If it's viable that is. These have great access for wheelchairs. Just a thought."
