A Knowsley-licensed private hire driver has been convicted after licensing enforcement officers discovered two illegal tyres on his vehicle during an inspection carried out in Liverpool last year.
According to Liverpool City Council Licensing, the vehicle was stopped and inspected by enforcement officers, who identified two tyres that did not comply with legal requirements. The case was subsequently referred for prosecution and was recently heard in court.
The driver was convicted of the offence and received three penalty points on his driving licence. The court also imposed fines and costs totalling £766.
The case highlights the continued focus on vehicle safety standards within the licensed taxi and private hire sector. Tyres are among the most closely scrutinised vehicle components during roadside and compliance inspections due to their direct impact on braking, steering and overall road safety.
Local authorities across the UK regularly carry out joint enforcement operations targeting licensed vehicles, checking for issues including tyre condition, vehicle defects, licensing compliance and insurance requirements. Drivers found operating vehicles that fail to meet legal standards can face prosecution, penalty points, fines and, in some cases, action against their private hire or taxi licence.
Liverpool City Council Licensing said: “Last year, Licensing Enforcement Officers inspected a Knowsley licensed Private Hire Vehicle and discovered two illegal tyres. The case was recently heard at court, and the driver was convicted. He received 3 penalty points, together with fines and costs totalling £766.”
