Compliance Officers from City of Wolverhampton Council joined forces with Liverpool City Council Licensing and Merseyside Police Traffic to carry out checks on licensed vehicles operating in Liverpool.
The joint operation took place overnight on Thursday 3 July and involved inspections of vehicles and drivers to ensure they met licensing standards. No further details on the outcome of the checks were released by the authorities.
Out-of-area checks are increasingly used to address concerns raised by local authorities and members of the public about vehicles licensed in one area working extensively in another. Under current licensing laws, a private hire vehicle licensed by one council can legally operate in another, as long as it was pre-booked through a licensed operator.
Wolverhampton-licensed vehicles are often seen working across the country due to the city council’s efficient digital application system and quicker turnaround times. This has led to concerns about whether drivers and vehicles licensed elsewhere are complying with local standards when operating in a different area.
Joint enforcement operations, like the one carried out in Liverpool, are used to support public safety and ensure that vehicles, regardless of where they are licensed, meet all required legal and safety standards while working outside their licensing authority.
A City of Wolverhampton Council Public Protection spokesperson said: “Last night, Compliance Officers were working in Liverpool with colleagues from Liverpool City Council Licesning and Merseyside Police Traffic carrying out compliance checks on licensed vehicles. Working together to ensure the safety of the public travelling in licensed vehicles.”
