The London EV Company’s (LEVC) electric TX taxi has played a major role in cutting harmful emissions from the capital’s black cab fleet, reducing nitrogen oxides (NOx) by nearly 60% across London.

The latest data shows that more than 9,000 TX taxis now operate in the city, preventing an estimated 15,000 kilograms of NOx from entering the atmosphere each year. The figures come as Defra confirmed London met NO₂ Air Quality Standards for the first time in 2024.

LEVC’s TX model uses the firm’s eCity powertrain, which pairs an electric motor and battery with a small petrol range-extender. The vehicle emits 94% less NOx than the previous diesel TX4, while still delivering the range and reliability required by working taxi drivers. The vehicle can travel up to 78 miles on pure electric power and has a total range of around 333 miles.

Since its launch, more than £1 billion has been invested in the TX project by parent company Geely. With over seven years of global sales, the model is estimated to have prevented around 78,000 kilograms of NOx and 360 million kilograms of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere.

Imperial College London research shows that air pollution was linked to up to 4,100 deaths in Greater London in 2019, with improvements to air quality expected to add over six million life years to the city’s population.

LEVC’s progress has also changed the emissions profile of the taxi fleet. By 2022, taxis accounted for only 21.7% of total road-based NOx in Central London, less than emissions produced by vans. A further 4,358 electric TXs have since replaced older diesel vehicles, bringing additional environmental gains.

With around 5,300 diesel taxis still in operation in London and many more across the UK, LEVC continues to work with drivers, local authorities and central government to accelerate the shift to low-emission transport. Each new TX emits seventeen times less NOx than the diesel model it replaces, representing a measurable improvement in air quality for every cab that joins the fleet.

Chris Allen, LEVC Managing Director, said: “Designed, engineered, and manufactured from the ground up in the UK to be the world’s most advanced electric taxi, the TX is the ideal vehicle for drivers, passengers, the planet and our capital city. Millions of Londoners are now breathing cleaner air thanks to the rapid growth in popularity of the zero-exhaust-emission capable TX, which has contributed to a substantial reduction in not only harmful local air pollutants, but also total emissions across the entire London black taxi fleet since its launch in 2018.”
