A licensed driver in Liverpool has been fined £290 after failing to pay a fixed penalty notice issued for smoking in a licensed vehicle, according to Liverpool City Council Licensing.
In a statement posted on social media, the council said that last year a licensed driver was issued with a fixed penalty notice for smoking in a licensed vehicle but did not pay the fine. Smoking in licensed vehicles is illegal under smoke-free legislation covering public and work vehicles.
The authority confirmed the matter was recently heard in court. The driver was issued a £290 fine in addition to court costs and a surcharge after ignoring the original fixed penalty notice.
Liverpool City Council Licensing warned that failing to pay a fixed penalty notice can lead to prosecution. The case serves as a reminder that non-compliance can escalate to court proceedings if enforcement action is not addressed at an early stage.

Licensed taxis and private hire vehicles are classed as smoke-free environments under national legislation. Drivers are responsible for ensuring compliance within their vehicles, with breaches potentially resulting in financial penalties and further licensing consequences.
The council has not released further details about the individual involved or whether any additional licensing review will take place following the conviction.
