A private hire vehicle driver licensed by Liverpool City Council has been fined and disqualified from driving after continuing to operate despite having their licence suspended on safety grounds.
A council licensing spokesperson confirmed the case was recently heard in court, where the driver received eight penalty points. This brought their total above the 12-point threshold, triggering an automatic nine-month driving ban.
The court also imposed a financial penalty totalling £990. The enforcement action followed what the council described as “serious safety concerns” that had already led to the suspension of the driver’s private hire licence.
Under licensing rules, drivers must immediately cease operating as private hire vehicle driver once their licence is suspended, with breaches treated as a significant offence due to the potential risk to passenger safety.

The case highlights ongoing regulatory efforts by local authorities to ensure compliance within the private hire sector, particularly where safety standards are in question.
A Liverpool City Council Licensing spokesperson said: “After having their PHV licence suspended due to serious safety concerns, a Liverpool licensed driver chose to continue working. The matter was recently heard in court, 8 points issued, a 9-month ban imposed for exceeding 12 points, and a total fine of £990.”
