Licensing officers from Liverpool City Council have identified a safety defect on a licensed hackney carriage following a joint roadside compliance operation with Merseyside Police.
In a statement posted on social media, LCC Licensing confirmed officers worked alongside Merseyside Police traffic units to conduct checks on private hire and hackney carriage vehicles operating across multiple boroughs. The authority said the operation formed part of ongoing efforts to maintain safety standards across the licensed fleet.
During the inspection activity, one Liverpool City Council licensed hackney carriage vehicle was found to have a tyre with cords exposed. According to the licensing team, the defect was identified following an inspection in Hanover Street, Liverpool, in the early hours of 1 March 2026.
LCC Licensing stated that the driver will now be summoned for the offence. No further details have been released regarding whether the vehicle was immediately suspended from service or whether additional enforcement action is under consideration.

Fleet owners and drivers are subject to both routine annual vehicle inspections and targeted roadside enforcement activity. Exposed cords indicate significant tyre wear and can present a serious safety risk, particularly in wet conditions.
The joint operation reflects continued collaboration between Liverpool City Council and Merseyside Police to monitor vehicle standards and regulatory compliance across the region. Such checks typically assess documentation, vehicle condition and driver licensing compliance.
Liverpool City Council has not confirmed how many vehicles were inspected during the latest operation or whether further offences were detected.
