Liverpool licensing operation finds Sefton-licensed private hire vehicle with TWO illegal tyres

A Sefton Council licensed private hire vehicle has been taken out of service after officers discovered two illegal tyres with exposed cords during a joint enforcement operation carried out by Liverpool City Council Licensing and Merseyside Tunnel Police.
The vehicle was stopped as part of ongoing compliance checks aimed at improving safety standards among licensed taxi and private hire vehicles operating in the Liverpool area. Images released by Liverpool City Council Licensing show both tyres worn well beyond the legal tread limit, with the internal cords exposed.
In a statement, Liverpool City Council Licensing said: “During a joint operation with Merseyside Tunnels Police, a Sefton Council licensed vehicle was found to be operating with TWO illegal tyres, both with cords exposed. Dangerous defects like these put everyone at risk. Enforcement activity will continue to keep passengers safe.”
Driving with tyres below the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre, or with exposed cords, significantly increases the risk of tyre failure and reduced braking performance. Such defects can result in enforcement action against both the driver and vehicle operator.
The latest discovery comes as licensing authorities across the UK continue to carry out roadside inspections targeting taxi and private hire vehicles.
Regular compliance operations are designed to identify unsafe vehicles, ensure licensing standards are being met and help protect passengers travelling in licensed transport.
