A Liverpool City Council licensed private hire vehicle has been suspended following roadside checks that identified excessive exhaust emissions and an apparent engine fault.
Liverpool City Council Licensing confirmed officers stopped the vehicle after observing “excessive thick black smoke” coming from the exhaust while the engine management warning light was illuminated.
In a statement posted by LCC Licensing, the authority said: “Following officer checks, a Liverpool City Council PHV was suspended for emitting excessive thick black smoke and displaying an engine management warning light. The issue was evident to both officers and passing members of the public.”
The suspension highlights the continued focus by licensing authorities on vehicle safety and emissions compliance within the private hire sector. Councils across the UK conduct roadside inspections as part of wider efforts to improve passenger safety standards and reduce harmful vehicle emissions in urban areas.
Liverpool licensing officers took immediate action after a private hire vehicle was found emitting thick black smoke and displaying an engine management warning light.
Black smoke from diesel vehicles can indicate serious engine or fuel system faults, including issues linked to injectors, turbochargers or diesel particulate filters. Vehicles found operating in poor mechanical condition can face immediate suspension until repairs and compliance checks are completed.
