A Liverpool licensed taxi driver has been reported for using an incorrect tariff following a joint enforcement operation at the Kingsway Tunnel carried out by Liverpool City Council licensing officers and Mersey Tunnels Police.
The roadside operation took place overnight and focused on fare compliance, vehicle standards and driver licensing among taxis and private hire vehicles using the tunnel. The council said the tariff breach was identified during checks on licensed vehicles operating through the route.
Alongside the tariff issue, licensing officers recorded a small number of vehicle defects, with notices issued where faults were found. No details were provided on the severity of the defects or any follow up enforcement action.
Despite the breaches identified, Liverpool City Council said the overall level of compliance among drivers and vehicles checked was high, with the majority meeting licensing and regulatory requirements.

Tariff compliance remains a priority for local authorities, as incorrect fare use can lead to overcharging and undermine passenger confidence in the licensed taxi trade. Councils have powers to investigate and take enforcement action where drivers are found to be operating outside approved fare structures.
The council said the operation formed part of its routine compliance work, with high traffic locations such as the Mersey Tunnels regularly targeted for joint enforcement activity.
A Liverpool City council Licensing spokesperson said: ”LCC Licensing joined Mersey Tunnels Police in a roadside Op last night at the Kingsway Tunnel. A high level of compliance was found in relation to licensed vehicles/drivers. An LCC Taxi driver reported for using the incorrect tariff and a small number of vehicle defects issued.”
