A London black cab driver has been praised online after completing an unusual passenger request that highlighted the level of trust often placed in the capital’s licensed taxi trade.

The incident came to light after a driver on social media shared details of the unique encounter with followers. The driver said a woman hailed his cab in London before handing him £230 in cash and a handwritten shopping list. She asked him to visit a branch of Planet Organic, purchase the listed items and deliver them to her mother, telling him to keep any remaining change.

Posting about the experience, the driver wrote: “Only in a London cab. Woman’s just hailed me, given me £230 in cash, a list to go to a shop called Planet Organic, buy this stuff and deliver to her mum. Keep change. Love how people trust us like that.”

The driver later confirmed that he completed the request, buying the groceries before delivering them to the intended address. The story quickly drew attention online, with many pointing to it as an example of the unique relationship between passengers and drivers operating within the capital’s regulated taxi system.

Licensed drivers operating in London are required to complete the rigorous training process known as The Knowledge, which involves memorising thousands of streets and points of interest across the city. The qualification has long been associated with a high level of professionalism and reliability within the trade.

Interactions like this, while unusual, are not entirely uncommon for drivers working in the capital’s black cab fleet. Drivers regularly assist passengers with errands, transporting forgotten items, helping vulnerable passengers reach appointments or delivering parcels across the city when requested.

The incident also reflects the longstanding reputation of London’s black taxi drivers as trusted service providers.

As the post circulates online, generating hundreds of thousands of views, it illustrate the distinctive service culture that has long defined London’s black cab sector.
