The London Taxi Drivers’ Charity for Children (LTCFC) has completed its 98th annual summer outing, taking a convoy of London black cabs to Hertfordshire Zoo for the fourth consecutive year as part of one of the capital’s longest-running charitable traditions.

The volunteer-led charity said that almost 1,000 London schoolchildren, predominantly those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND), have visited Hertfordshire Zoo through the annual outing over the last four years.

The trips are designed to remove many of the transport and organisational barriers that can prevent children with complex needs from enjoying educational and recreational days out alongside their classmates and families.

Funded entirely through voluntary donations and delivered by volunteer licensed London taxi drivers, the LTCFC provides free outings, entertainment and equipment for children with special educational needs, disabilities and disadvantaged backgrounds. Drivers donate both their time and vehicles to transport the children, while sponsors help cover operational costs including fuel and event logistics.

Feedback from participating schools highlighted the impact of the day. Mark Wiltshire, from one of the attending schools, said: “Our children had a fabulous time at Hertfordshire Zoo! The event was well-organised, inclusive and run with tireless enthusiasm. The greatest care was taken with pupil’s safety and wellbeing. Our driver really looked after us and gave us a superb, smooth ride.”

The children also shared their excitement about the experience, with comments including: “I’ve never been in a taxi before!”, “This was the best day ever. Can I come next year?” and “Thank you LTCFC. It’s always a pleasure to come on this trip.”

The charity thanked its 2026 Roll of Honour of sponsors, volunteers and partners for supporting the event. Among those recognised were DCL Insurance for funding drivers’ fuel, the volunteer taxi drivers, Hertfordshire Zoo staff, the AA, Metropolitan Police, LMS Medical Team, Ears PLC Radio, A&S Motors, Asda and Big Yellow, alongside numerous individuals who contributed to the organisation and delivery of the day. Planning is already underway for the charity’s 99th annual summer outing in 2027.
