LONDON TAXI ETIQUETTE: What are the rules when picking up passengers on Feeder Ranks?

London's black cabs are a key part of the city's transport landscape, providing a dependable mode of travel for many.

Taxi drivers must follow a self-regulated code of conduct designed to uphold a fair and systematic approach in finding and accepting fares. This code helps prevent conflicts with fellow drivers and ensures a reliable service for passengers.

One critical aspect of this code is the use of feeder ranks. These ranks, which are an integral part to many of the larger taxi rank systems in the city, are positioned near major ranks at locations like train stations and hotels. Marked distinctly by signs or yellow lines, feeder ranks serve as a legitimate queuing point for cabs.

When a taxi is at the forefront of a feeder rank, the driver has the right to accept any approaching customer. It’s always seen as a welcome big bonus to the driver!

However, drivers are cautioned against picking up passengers from non-sanctioned ‘pop-up’ ranks, such as those outside nightlife venues. Doing so can lead to disputes with local authorities or other drivers.
