LTDA urges taxi drivers to keep DBS Update Service subscriptions active or risk licensing issues

The Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association (LTDA) has urged taxi drivers to keep their DBS Update Service subscriptions active, warning that a missed annual payment could affect their licensing and ability to work.
In an article published on the LTDA website, executive Paul Kirby said Transport for London (TfL) would not issue a taxi driver’s licence unless the driver was signed up to the service. If a subscription lapses, drivers may have to submit a new DBS application and could face a period out of work while it is processed.
The DBS Update Service lets TfL check whether a driver’s criminal record information has changed. Kirby said TfL checks drivers’ subscription status every six months, so drivers should not wait until their next licence renewal to confirm that their account remains active.
The service costs £15 a year, according to the article. Payment is made by bank card, rather than by direct debit or standing order. Drivers who replace or cancel a payment card therefore need to update their details to avoid a failed payment and a lapse in their subscription.
Kirby also advised drivers to retain their DBS certificate and subscription reference number. The reference number is issued when a driver subscribes and can be used as proof of subscription, but Kirby said it is displayed on the DBS website rather than included in email reminders.
Drivers receive an annual email reminder when payment is due. Kirby advised anyone uncertain about a reminder or their subscription to contact the LTDA for guidance. He said checking the details could help drivers avoid extra costs and possible time away from work.
The association’s guidance comes as it reports that some drivers are not renewing their subscriptions on time, or are not subscribed at all. Drivers are advised to check their account and payment details before their subscription expires.
