Merseyside Police officers sent out a warning to neighbouring taxi and private hire licensing authorities stating that they expect the “same high standards of safety” as vehicles registered in the Liverpool area.

The call comes as traffic officers stopped a City of Wolverhampton Council licensed minicab in the St Helen’s region.

The white Toyota private hire vehicle was issued a Traffic Offence Report (TOR) after the driver was observed using a mobile device whilst driving.

A Merseyside Police Traffic Unit spokesperson said via social media: “We are continuing our taxi safety operation.

“Any taxis visiting from other areas will be expected to have the same high standards of safety as our Merseyside vehicles.”

In a further tweet, the police unit added: “Wolverhampton plated private hire stopped in St Helen's. Driver see using a mobile phone whilst driving, issued a TOR for the offence.”
