NON-PAYMENT PROBLEMS: Wellman Car move to nighttime pre-payment rides only after violent driver attack
In response to a serious incident involving one of their drivers, Wellman Car has introduced mandatory pre-payment for night hires, with potential extension to other times.
The decision follows a violent attack on a driver, who was left needing hospital treatment.
Clare Welsh, Company Director at Wellman Car, confirmed the new policy, stating that it was necessary for the safety of their drivers. The move is intended to reduce the risk of non-payment and violent incidents.
Welsh urged customers to support the change, emphasising that pre-payment is a standard practice across various industries. She pointed out that the policy would help ensure the safety of drivers, who provide a vital service around the clock.
The driver involved in the incident has now returned home after spending 12 hours in A&E. He sustained serious injuries, including the loss of four teeth and multiple stitches to his face and mouth.
Welsh said: “Due to a horrific incident last night, from which our driver is still being treated at hospital for his injuries, and the rise in non payments.
“We will be forcing pre payment on hires during the night as well as at other times as we see fit.
“Please do not be offended by this, this is for the security of our drivers.
“Our drivers work very hard providing a safe and reliable service 24/7 and should not be assaulted for simply asking for the fare the customers asked him to take them.
“Please help us by supporting our drivers and narrowing the chance of this to zero by using our pre pay service so as to keep our drivers safe at all times.
“You wouldn’t go on a plane, train without pre paying? You wouldn’t order a delivery and not pre pay? All services deserve payment. Stay safe everyone.”
