Works to REMOVE the controversial Euston Road cycle lane are set to begin next week after ongoing concerns around rising congestion and slower public transport journey times.

The temporary eastbound cycle lane which was installed in July 2020 will be removed to allow for a bus lane to be reinstated.

According to Transport for London (TfL) sources, bus journey times have increased in the area due to the added congestion caused by the cycle lane. Cyclists will be urged to use the new bus lane or an alternative route just south of Euston Road.

Back in Autumn 2020, the Mayor of London first admitted the rising congestion around Euston Road caused by the new cycle lane was being closely monitored by TfL.

Sadiq Khan also confirmed that should any severe issues be identified, TfL will “evaluate the reasons” and “investigate any possible steps to mitigate”.

A TfL spokesperson said: “As London gets busier our monitoring has identified significant increases to bus journey times along Euston road, resulting in delays to bus passengers. We are also seeing increased traffic congestion on Euston Road. Furthermore, High Speed 2 (HS2) construction works are planned in and around Euston Station and HS2 will need to use road space on the Euston Road as part of their construction plans.

“Reinstating the bus lane on Euston Road should help to reduce the delays currently experienced. As road space will be required for the HS2 works, it will not be possible to maintain a cycle lane here.”

A Licensed Taxi Drivers’ Association (LTDA) spokesperson confirmed that works to reinstate the Euston Road bus lane will start on Monday 8 August.
