Passenger trust and insurance responsibility emerge as key issues after London autonomous taxi launch, says Zego CEO

Passenger trust and clarity over insurance responsibility will become increasingly important as autonomous taxis develop in London, according to Zego CEO and founder Sten Saar, following the launch of supervised self-driving rides through the Uber app.
Uber and Wayve have begun offering autonomous journeys in the capital using all-electric Ford Mustang Mach-E vehicles equipped with the Wayve AI Driver. The vehicles initially retain a trained Transport for London licensed private hire driver onboard to supervise journeys and intervene where necessary.
The deployment means passengers requesting UberX, Uber Electric or Uber Comfort can potentially be matched with an autonomous vehicle at no additional cost. Customers can choose to reject the autonomous option and switch to a conventional vehicle before it arrives.
While much of the industry debate has focused on what autonomous technology could eventually mean for professional drivers, Saar argues that the passenger experience will also change substantially. In particular, customers will have to become accustomed to travelling in vehicles where the person behind the wheel is supervising rather than routinely controlling the journey.
Saar said: “London’s first self-driving taxis mark an important moment for the future of urban transport, but for passengers, the biggest change may be physiological: getting into a taxi and knowing the person sitting behind the wheel is not actually driving it.
“For passengers, trust will be a huge part of the transition to autonomous travel. Even if the technology is designed to respond to hazards and make decisions on the road, many people will understandably want to know what happens if something goes wrong and who is ultimately responsible for their safety.”
The current London deployment retains a licensed professional inside the vehicle, providing passengers with an identifiable person capable of taking control. Saar believes that supervised operation provides a transitional stage between conventional private hire journeys and a future service where there may be no traditional driver at all.
He said: “The presence of a human safety driver provides an important middle ground as this technology is introduced, allowing passengers to experience autonomous driving while still having someone to intervene if necessary. But as the technology develops, the industry will need to consider how passengers understand and interact with vehicles where there is no traditional driver in control.”
Insurance is another area attracting attention as the technology progresses. Traditional private hire insurance arrangements have developed around a human driver being responsible for operating the vehicle, but autonomous systems potentially introduce additional parties into decisions surrounding responsibility and liability.
For insurers, operators and autonomous technology developers, determining where responsibility sits when an automated driving system is controlling the vehicle is therefore becoming an important part of the commercial framework supporting wider deployment.
Saar said: “This is where insurance also becomes important. If the AI is driving but a human is still responsible for intervening, the traditional relationship between passenger, driver, vehicle and insurer becomes much less straightforward. As autonomous taxis become more common, clear responsibilities will be essential to maintaining passenger confidence in the technology.”
The passenger response will also provide Uber, Wayve and the wider growing autonomous vehicle sector with early evidence of public willingness to use the technology. Uber previously said more than 140,000 Londoners had opted in through its Trip Preferences feature to increase their chances of being matched with a Wayve vehicle.
Passengers nevertheless retain the ability to decline an autonomous vehicle, making acceptance rates and repeat usage important indicators as the service develops.
