The Peterborough Private Hire Association (PPHA) has issued a safety notice urging private hire drivers and operators to stop collecting passengers on Town Bridge outside Charters following complaints from members of the public, local businesses and other road users.
According to the association, multiple complaints have been received about vehicles stopping on the bridge to collect passengers. The PPHA said the location becomes particularly busy during peak periods and evenings, creating concerns over traffic flow and road safety.
The association warned that vehicles stopping on the bridge are contributing to “increased congestion and traffic disruption”, “reduced visibility for approaching drivers”, a “higher risk of accidents” and “potential danger to pedestrians and cyclists”.
Instead, the PPHA is encouraging drivers to use the lower car park at Charters for both pick-ups and drop-offs wherever possible. It said the designated area is “far safer and helps reduce disruption for everyone”.
The notice to drivers also reminded drivers that “while convenience is important, safety and professionalism must always come first”, adding that using the alternative location demonstrates a commitment to responsible driving and helps maintain the reputation of Peterborough’s licensed private hire trade.
The PPHA has asked operators to communicate the guidance clearly to drivers and reinforce the importance of following the request. The association said: “By cooperating and showing consideration for others, we can address these concerns and continue to promote a positive image of our industry.”
