Police have been granted six months to investigate the origins of around £11,000 found inside a supermarket sandwich bag during a traffic stop involving a taxi on the M6.
Officers stopped the vehicle as it travelled southbound near Penrith after reportedly seeing it speeding in the outside lane. The driver appeared nervous and was shaking, apologising for his speed and claiming he had visited a friend before immediately starting his return journey.
Police became suspicious after noticing that the taxi was arranged differently from normal, including air fresheners placed on the rear seat.
A search uncovered documents belonging to the driver beneath the front passenger seat. Officers also found a Waitrose sandwich bag containing two large bundles of cash worth approximately £11,000.
Police said the driver’s explanation provided reasonable grounds to suspect that the money was connected to unlawful conduct.
Carlisle magistrates approved the detention of the funds for six months, allowing financial investigators to trace their source. The driver did not attend the court hearing.
