Police are investigating reports of common assault in South Shields after a taxi driver was physically attacked.

The reported incident occurred on Keppel Street in South Shields around 3am on 28 August.

According to sources, a man became aggressive after refusing to pay for a taxi journey upfront. The man physically assaulted the cabbie and also caused damage to the vehicle.

Police have released CCTV image of a man they would like to talk to regarding the incident.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “It was reported an unknown male has refused to pay for a taxi fare upfront when he entered the vehicle at Keppel Street. Upon being asked to pay, it was reported he became aggressive and physically assaulted the taxi driver, before kicking the car door, causing damage.

“The male then fled the scene on foot after the owner of the vehicle confronted him. Subsequently, an investigation was launched to locate the person responsible.

“As part of our enquiries, we have now identified a man we'd like to speak to. He was seen in the Keppel Street area at the time of the offence and we believe he could assist our investigation.
