Police have reported a driver who stopped on the hard shoulder of a motorway to pick apples from a tree.
Merseyside Police’s Roads Policing Unit shared details of the incident on social media, reminding motorists that the hard shoulder is reserved strictly for emergencies. Officers said they “didn’t think this needed to be pointed out”, after finding the vehicle pulled over next to the trees.
The driver had stopped to collect fruit growing by the roadside, a move which police confirmed was not a legitimate reason to use the hard shoulder.
Motorists are only allowed to stop on the hard shoulder if their vehicle breaks down or in the event of an emergency. Unauthorised stops can lead to prosecution for dangerous or careless driving.
The force concluded its message by confirming that the driver had been reported for the offence.
