Taxi drivers in Bury have been urged to take extra precautions after Greater Manchester Police reported a rise in thefts from vehicles near the town centre.
Bury Council’s Licensing Service issued a warning to all licensed drivers, private hire operators and trade representatives following intelligence received from the police. The advisory message outlined that while taxis are not believed to be targeted specifically, one recent incident did involve a taxi.
The thefts, described as opportunistic, have involved suspects smashing car windows to take items left on view. Drivers are being reminded not to leave money or valuables in their vehicles.
The Licensing Service also directed drivers to a council webpage offering advice on how hackney carriage and private hire drivers can stay safe while working. The page includes practical steps for improving safety while on shift and while vehicles are unattended.
Drivers are being asked to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to Greater Manchester Police on 101 or online. In emergencies, they are advised to call 999.
