Portsmouth Police seek witnesses after late-night assault at taxi rank

Updated: May 5

Hampshire Police are appealing for witnesses following an assault at a Portsmouth taxi rank last weekend.

Two women were punched as they attempted to hail a taxi outside Debenhams on Palmerston Road, just after midnight on 8 September.

One of the victims, a 50-year-old woman, reported being dragged from a taxi by another woman who arrived at the taxi rank with a group. Subsequently, a man punched the 50-year-old and also struck a 34-year-old woman who was with her.

The man was reportedly part of a group of ten people. He is described as white, around 5ft 5ins tall, with short brown cropped hair, and aged in his 30s. During the incident, he was wearing a blue t-shirt, which he later removed.

Both women fortunately escaped serious injury.

Hampshire Police are seeking information from anyone who witnessed the altercation involving the two groups of people. Witnesses are encouraged to contact the police on 101, quoting 44190323659, or to reach out anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
