Private hire driver arrested after 26-year-old woman dies in Liverpool collision
A private hire driver has been arrested following a fatal road traffic collision involving a pedestrian in Liverpool.
Merseyside Police said the collision happened shortly before 5.40pm on Wednesday 2 September on the city-bound carriageway of Aigburth Road, between Fulwood Road and Larkfield Road.
The incident involved a white Toyota Voxy private hire vehicle and a 26-year-old woman. The pedestrian was taken to hospital but was later pronounced dead.
Her next of kin have been informed and are receiving support from specially trained officers, police confirmed.
The 41-year-old driver stopped at the scene. He was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving while under the influence of drugs and remained in police custody at the time of the statement.
No charge has been announced. Merseyside Police said an investigation was underway, with officers carrying out CCTV and witness enquiries in the surrounding area.
Detective Sergeant Andy Roper, from the force’s Matrix Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “First and foremost my thoughts and those of my team remain with woman’s family at this sad time. Road death causes devastation for all those involved and it is our absolute priority to get answers for her family.
“An investigation has been launched to ascertain the circumstance of this collision and we are following up a number of lines of enquiry including speaking to potential witnesses and examining CCTV in the area.”
Police believe Aigburth Road would have been carrying a large volume of traffic at the time, including buses, taxis and delivery vehicles. Officers are seeking dashcam footage from anyone travelling through the area around 5.40pm.
DS Roper added: “I would urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or was travelling in the area at the time with a dashcam fitted to their vehicle to make contact with our team so that we can check if it has captured anything which may provide answers surrounding this collision.
“Also, if you live in the area and have a CCTV system or Ring doorbell, I would be grateful if you could check your footage to see if you captured anything.”
