Private hire driver disqualified after court REJECTS claim non-UK motorist was behind the wheel when caught speeding

PC Patrick Quinton, the ‘Taxi Cop’ for Avon and Somerset Police, has highlighted the outcome of a court case involving a private hire driver who was caught speeding in Chew Magna in September 2024.
According to PC Quinton, the minicab driver claimed that a non-UK licence holder had been driving the vehicle at the time of the offence. However, police challenged the account and the case proceeded to Bath Magistrates’ Court.
On 15 July 2026, magistrates rejected the driver’s explanation and sentenced him to a six-month driving disqualification. The court also ordered him to pay £604 in fines and costs.
As a result of losing his driving licence, the individual is no longer licensed as a private hire driver.
Reflecting on the case, Quinton issued a warning to the trade, saying: “We didn’t believe him, and nor did Bath Magistrates… Please don’t be tempted to lie about your traffic tickets!”
