A private hire taxi driver has withdrawn his appeal against the revocation of his licence after admitting he falsely claimed his wife was driving when his vehicle was caught speeding on the M1.
Gebrebrahan Nayzgi, who had been licensed in Bradford, was recorded exceeding the speed limit on the M1 near Sheffield on 26 May. When contacted by police, Nayzgi said his wife had been behind the wheel in an attempt to avoid penalty points.
Police checks later established that Nayzgi’s wife did not hold a private hire licence or a driving licence at all. Following further enquiries, Nayzgi admitted that he had been the driver at the time of the offence.
The incident was referred to Bradford Council, which revoked Nayzgi’s private hire driver licence. Taxi licensing officers concluded that the attempt to mislead police demonstrated a lack of honesty and integrity, and that he was therefore not a fit and proper person to hold a licence.

According to the BBC, Nayzgi appealed the decision in November, telling Bradford Magistrates’ Court that he intended to demonstrate his suitability to remain licensed. A full hearing had been scheduled for 16 January.
However, magistrates were informed on Friday that Nayzgi had withdrawn the appeal. As a result, the council’s decision to revoke his licence remains in force and the case will not proceed to a contested hearing.
The court ordered Nayzgi to pay the council’s costs of £220. Magistrates were also told that no further legal action would be pursued in relation to the appeal.
