Chargepoint operator Qwello UK announced the successful installation of 49 smart charging points across the City of London.

This significant milestone comes after Qwello UK secured a contract with The City of London Corporation following a competitive tender process.

The project aimed to upgrade the charging infrastructure within the Square Mile, and the installation of charging points was completed in just eight weeks across five locations. These included Minories Car Park at 1 Shorter St, Baynard House Car Park on Queen Victoria St, 23 London Wall Car Park, Tower Hill Car Park at 50 Lower Thames St, and Smithfield Car Park.

With all 49 charging stations now operational, electric vehicle users in the City of London should now benefit from a more reliable, convenient, and accessible charging experience.

Contactless payment options, a reservation service accessible through the Qwello app, and 24/7 customer support are all available for EV users. Each charging station features an integrated retractable cable with an 11kW 3 Phase Type 2 plug and all charging points are compatible with all European and US EV-connection standards.

This major charging infrastructure upgrade aligns with The City of London Corporation's Climate Action Strategy goal of becoming a net-zero organisation by 2040. By encouraging and facilitating the use of electric vehicles powered by 100% renewable electricity, the City of London aims to actively contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.

Chairman of the City of London Corporation Planning and Transport Committee, Shravan Joshi, said: “I’m delighted to see that the Square Mile’s electric vehicle charging points have been upgraded so swiftly and without issue. Much of central London and the Square Mile has experienced higher levels of air pollution than the rest of the UK, but through initiatives like these, we have been able to reduce the City’s Greenhouse Gas Emissions by more than 55%, since 2008.

“The City’s Climate Action and Air Quality strategies are already bearing fruit, delivering a clean and safe environment for the Square Mile’s residents, workers and visitors.”

Martin Hale, Managing Director of Qwello UK, said: “It’s been great to have been given the opportunity to work with the City of London Corporation and deliver and complete on the planned charging infrastructure upgrade in just fourteen weeks.

"We’re confident that residents, businesses and visitors to the Square Mile will find our driver-friendly higher power and feature-rich stations easy to use and a big improvement on the previous charge stations available.”
