Police investigating a racially aggravated assault on a taxi driver in Nottingham have released an image of a man they want to identify who may hold information around the incident.
The driver was assaulted after stopping on North Circus Street at around 11.30pm on 23 December 2025. He had asked two passengers to leave the vehicle after it became apparent they were not the customers who had booked the taxi, despite claims made when they flagged the vehicle down moments earlier on Angel Row.
Police said the male passenger slapped the driver twice to the head and subjected him to racial abuse. A large bottle of fizzy drink was then poured over the vehicle’s dashboard, damaging the internal speaker system.
After exiting the taxi, the man also kicked and punched the vehicle before leaving the area. The woman involved was present throughout the incident.
Nottingham Police said enquiries are ongoing and officers believe the man shown in the released image may have information that could assist the investigation.
The incident adds to ongoing safety concerns within the taxi and private hire sector, particularly around late night city centre work and racially motivated abuse against drivers.
PC Jonathan Everett, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This was a deeply distressing incident for the taxi driver who did not deserve to be treated in such a despicable way.
“Understandably, he was left very shaken by the incident and sadly it left him contemplating whether to continue working as a taxi driver.
“We are treating the matter very seriously and have identified a man who we wish to speak to in connection with this incident.
“Do you recognise the man in this image? If so, please get in touch with us by calling 101 quoting crime number 25*749720 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.”
