A Sefton-licensed private hire driver has been fined £458 after failing to pay a fixed penalty issued for smoking inside a licensed vehicle, according to Liverpool City Council Licensing.
The offence, described by licensing officials as both illegal and unhygienic, initially resulted in a fixed penalty notice. However, the driver did not pay the fine or engage with enforcement officers, leading to the case being escalated to court.
In a statement shared by LCC Licensing, the authority said: “A Sefton licensed PHV driver was issued a Fixed Penalty for smoking inside a licensed vehicle, an offence that is both illegal and unhygienic. The driver failed to pay the fine or engage with Officers, and the matter was recently heard in court, resulting in a £458 penalty.”
Smoking in licensed vehicles is prohibited under UK law as part of wider public health regulations, with strict expectations placed on taxi and private hire drivers to maintain clean and safe environments for passengers.
Failure to pay initial fixed penalty leads to higher court-imposed fine
The case highlights the potential financial and regulatory consequences for drivers who fail to comply with licensing conditions or engage with enforcement processes. Industry stakeholders are increasingly reminded that non-compliance can lead to escalated penalties and court action.
Licensing authorities across the UK prioritise passenger safety and hygiene standards, with enforcement activity forming a key part of maintaining public confidence in the taxi and private hire sector.
