"SEVERAL UNSAFE VEHICLES" taken off the road during evening of roadside taxi checks in Swansea
Updated: Mar 6, 2022
A number of licensed taxis and/or private hire vehicles have been taken off the road in Swansea for unsafe conditions.
Officers from South Wales Police Swansea, along with DVSA Enforcement officers and members of Swansea Council, conducted a number of spot checks on cabs on Friday evening.
Taking to social media to highlight the evening of safety checks, a spokesperson for South Wales Police said: "Licensing officer Jon Hancock working with DVSA Enforcement and taxi licensing officers from Swansea Council conducting spot checks on taxis this evening.
"Several unsafe vehicles identified and taken off the road so far."
Licensed taxis are expected to maintain high standards, in most cases higher standards than the average motorist. Not keeping up with regular safety checks could result in a vehicle being issued with an immediate prohibition notice.
Serious safety issues could also lead to the driver being issued with a fine, penalty points and even the loss of their driving or taxi licence.
On this occasion, Swansea Police did not disclose details of which safety issues were found and the exact number of vehicles taken off the road.
