A private hire vehicle (PHV) licensed by City of Wolverhampton Council was suspended during a safety operation at Preston Train Station on Friday evening 30 May.
The inspection was carried out in partnership between Wolverhampton Council Compliance Officers and British Transport Police North West. A total of 27 Wolverhampton-licensed PHVs were checked. One vehicle was taken off the road due to an illegal tyre.
Images shared by enforcement officers showed a worn tyre with tread clearly below legal standards.
In the UK, the legal minimum tread depth for car tyres is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the entire circumference. Driving with tyres that fall below this requirement is a criminal offence and can lead to penalty points, a fine, and vehicle suspension.
Tyres must also be free from cuts, bulges, or other damage that could lead to failure. Operators of licensed vehicles have a duty to regularly check their tyres and ensure they are roadworthy at all times.
The joint operation formed part of continued efforts to maintain safety standards for passengers using licensed transport services.
A City of Wolverhampton Council Public Protection spokesperson said: “Yesterday evening, Compliance Officers had a successful joint operation at Preston Train Station with British transport Police North West. 27 City of Wolverhampton Council PHVs checked. 1 PHV was suspended due to illegal tyre. Working together to ensure everyone gets home safe.”
