Southend-on-Sea City Council has opened a public consultation on proposed changes to taxi and private hire licensing rules.
The updated draft policy brings all current licensing guidance into a single document. It sets out standards for drivers, vehicles and operators, aiming to ensure services remain safe, accessible and environmentally responsible.
Proposals include higher expectations for driver conduct, appearance and vehicle condition. The council is also encouraging the use of electric and hybrid vehicles, as well as increasing the number of wheelchair-accessible taxis. Rules for operators and booking offices have been revised to provide greater clarity.
Residents, businesses and industry representatives are invited to share their views. Feedback will help shape how taxi and private hire services operate across the city.
The consultation is open until Wednesday 10 September 2025 and can be accessed via the Your Say Southend website.
Cllr Martin Terry, cabinet member for community safety and regulatory services, said: "We want residents and visitors to feel safe, respected and confident when using local taxi services. This policy update helps raise standards and make our expectations clearer for drivers, operators and customers alike.
"Whether you're a resident, business owner or driver, your feedback matters. Please take a few minutes to have your say."
