Rail passengers across parts of south London faced major disruption on Tuesday morning after a signalling fault and a depot derailment affected services operated by Southern, Thameslink and Gatwick Express.
Southern Rail said multiple incidents on its network meant it could not guarantee passengers would be able to complete their journeys, advising customers not to travel if possible. Those who had already started travelling were warned to allow at least 60 to 90 minutes of additional journey time.
The operator said the disruption was being driven by a signalling system fault between Norwood Junction and London Blackfriars, alongside a derailment at Selhurst depot. The incidents impacted the availability of trains and the movement of services through key sections of the network.
As a result, some Southern services were suspended, while Thameslink and Gatwick Express routes experienced significant delays and cancellations. Southern advised passengers to consider alternative routes or delay travel until later in the day.

The issues occurred during the morning peak, affecting commuter flows into central London and connections to Gatwick Airport. Southern said further updates would be provided as engineers worked to resolve the faults and restore normal operations.
The operator did not give an estimate for full service recovery, and advised passengers to check before travelling or speak to station staff for the latest information.
