Stay safe in taxis this Festive Season, says Tamworth Council

Perry Richardson

As the festive season kicks off, Tamworth Borough Council has shared vital advice for passengers using taxis.

With increased demand during the holidays, the council is urging passengers to plan their journeys and prioritise safety.

To avoid last-minute delays, passengers are encouraged to book taxis in advance. Paying upfront may be requested by drivers during the busy period—this is standard practice, particularly in December. Choosing a reputable taxi firm not only ensures safety but also supports local businesses.

For those hailing taxis at ranks, it’s crucial to check that the driver is wearing a valid identity badge. Passengers are also reminded never to enter unmarked vehicles and to trust their instincts if anything seems suspicious.

Travelling alone? Opt to sit behind the driver and ask them to wait until you’ve safely entered your destination. Share your live location with friends or family via messaging apps like WhatsApp to add another layer of reassurance.

Passengers should also keep taxis clean and pleasant for everyone by avoiding eating, drinking, smoking, or vaping during journeys. If possible, travel with a companion and always inform someone of your expected arrival time.

The council highlights that two types of licensed taxis operate in the borough: Hackney Carriage Vehicles, which can be hailed or used at ranks, and Private Hire Vehicles, which must be pre-booked.
