The Taxi Charity for Military Veterans has secured a £15,000 grant from the Army Benevolent Fund to support major acts of remembrance in 2025.
The funding will help deliver two key trips for veterans: the 80th anniversary of the Dutch Liberation in May and the 81st anniversary of the D-Day landings in June. Both events will see veterans travel in London black cabs, driven by volunteer cab drivers who donate their time.
These trips offer veterans, many now in their nineties, the chance to visit war cemeteries, take part in official remembrance ceremonies and engage with local communities. Schoolchildren in both the Netherlands and France continue to learn about the sacrifices made by Allied forces. These visits strengthen that message through direct contact with those who served.
The Army Benevolent Fund, also known as the Soldiers’ Charity, was created at the end of the Second World War. Its mission remains to support serving soldiers, veterans and their families, and to avoid the neglect experienced by veterans of earlier conflicts.
For the Taxi Charity, the grant ensures it can continue its work taking veterans to key commemorative events. The support helps keep alive the stories of those who served, and allows younger generations to connect directly with the history of the Second World War.
Colin Mills, London cab driver and Chairman of the Taxi Charity, said: “We are incredibly grateful to the Army Benevolent Fund for its generous support. These trips are not only a vital way to honour those who served, but they also offer a powerful opportunity for veterans to connect, reflect, and share their stories. For many, these visits are a deeply personal journey and often their last chance to return to places where they once served.
“This Army Benevolent Fund grant plays a crucial role in ensuring that these trips are possible. With the support of grants and donations from the public, the Taxi Charity continues its commitment to celebrating and supporting military veterans of all ages.”
Brigadier (Ret’d) Peter Monteith, Chief Operating Officer of the Army Benevolent Fund, said: “We are privileged to support this charity and the incredible volunteer drivers behind it. Their commitment to honouring our veterans, particularly in this milestone year, is nothing short of remarkable.“
