A licensed taxi was struck during a police pursuit in south Manchester after an uninsured vehicle failed to stop for officers, with the taxi driver escaping without injury, Greater Manchester Police said.
According to the Greater Manchester Police, officers from its Roads Policing Unit attempted to stop a black Audi A3 in the Newall Green area of Wythenshawe on Tuesday 13 January after checks showed the vehicle was uninsured. The driver failed to stop, prompting a short pursuit.
The pursuit ended within the grounds of Wythenshawe Hospital, where the Audi collided with a taxi. Police confirmed that no injuries were sustained by the occupant of the taxi.
The driver of the Audi, a 19-year-old man, abandoned the vehicle and attempted to flee but was quickly detained by officers. He was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop, dangerous driving, driving without insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.
During a search of the vehicle, officers recovered more than £3,500 worth of Class A drugs. The suspect was subsequently further arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs and being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs.
Police said the man remains in custody for questioning.
DC Katie Havens from the south Manchester district said: “This arrest highlights the dangers that our Roads Policing Unit face on a day-to-day basis.
“They not only brought a dangerous pursuit to an end without injury but also stopped a significant quantity of Class A drugs from being distributed in our communities.
“This is a clear example of how traffic enforcement, in this case, a driver of a car showing to have no insurance, can often leads to wider criminal investigations.
“We are committed to tackling the supply of drugs, every arrest and recovery of drugs is a step towards disrupting organised crime.”
