Merseyside Police have appealed for the public’s help after a taxi driver was allegedly punched repeatedly following a dispute over an unpaid fare in Liverpool.
Police have released images of two men they want to speak to after a taxi driver was allegedly assaulted and knocked unconscious following a fare dispute in Liverpool.
The incident happened shortly before 11.30pm on Saturday 11 July on Picton Road in the Wavertree area of the city. According to Merseyside Police, the 34-year-old driver had collected a group of male passengers from a restaurant on Mill Lane before taking them to their destination.
Officers said the passengers allegedly failed to pay the full fare when the journey ended. When the driver challenged them over the outstanding payment, the group reportedly ran back towards the taxi, shouted and swore at him before repeatedly punching him in the face.
The force said the driver lost consciousness during the assault and members of the public came to his aid before emergency services arrived. He was taken to hospital for treatment to a facial injury.
Detectives have launched an investigation, with witness enquiries and forensic examinations already underway. As part of the investigation, officers have released images of two men they believe may be able to assist with their enquiries.
Detective Inspector Jemma Berry described the attack as a serious assault on a driver carrying out his work.
She said: “This was a nasty and unprovoked assault on a man who was simply trying to do his job.
“This type of behaviour is totally unacceptable and we will do everything within our powers to find those responsible and bring them to justice.
“I would ask anyone who recognises the men to come forward and tell us what they know as we believe they could be vital to our investigation.”
Violence against taxi and private hire drivers remains a persistent concern across the UK, with industry representatives regularly calling for tougher penalties for assaults on licensed drivers and greater protection for those working late-night shifts.
Anyone who recognises the men pictured or has information about the incident is asked to contact Merseyside Police via its social media contact centre on X or Facebook, quoting reference 26000560878. Information can also be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or via its online reporting form.
